The word 'Dimapur' is derive from personal name 'Hidimbapur'. Hidimba was the king of Mahabharat famous Hidimba Ashura kingdom. The third Pandava Bhima married Hidimba's sister Hirimba. Due to this marriage they got offshoot Mahabharat famous war hero 'Ghototkacha.' According to some the word is of Austric and Dravidian origin such as Dimba means egg, puram a city i.e., an egg shapped city, so the name. The Dimacha clan of great Bodo say -the word comes from river name 'Dima', Di =river or water, ma = big, (again, the word Dimacha, means sons of big river, here, the word 'cha' means sons) + suffix -pura <Dravida -puram, a city or town. A city on the bank of big river. So the name. Bodos also call this city as ------- 'Dima-Halali', Dima-bhong etc. They found their routes somewhere in mid-Asia in the valleys of rivers Amu-Dariya and Syr-Dariya in fairly early times.
